DEMETRIA J. DOES THE "BIG CHOP"!!!
After months of putting off the inevitable, I finally did the Big Chop. Well, I didn’t exactly cut off all my hair but I’m now rocking a “Tapered TWA”. Before I started the transition to wearing my hair natural, I was already wearing a short pixie type cut. Therefore I’m not a stranger to short hair. I love the freedom of it. Long hair holds so much energy the same way wearing Locs for a long period of time. For a while, I’ve been vicariously hair crushing on various “Natural Hair Influencers” who have some of the most amazing cuts. For the most part, the reason why I’ve put off actually cutting my hair was due “fear” creeping in. The little voices in my head were telling “no wait until your birthday then cut it” or “wait until your brand takes off then do it”. The more I allowed doubt/fear control me the more I stayed the same.
With another birthday on the horizon, I begin to feel a shift in my life. As an Aquarius, I evolve constantly. In the first place, I was in search of something different for my hair because of the new direction for my brand. A visionary of some sort, I could see the particular hairstyle I wanted but didn’t know who could execute it or where to get it done. In essence, the desire to change my appearance just kept bothering me. Therefore I made the call to my stylist who used to do my hair during my “Relaxed Hair” days. The picture was submitted to her via text to make sure she was able to execute the style. Must admit she was taken back when she realized how serious I was. The idea of me cutting my shoulder length hair was shocking. As a result, she was like I can make it happen. In any event, the excitement pumped me up even more to follow through with the plan.
To say nothing of, Friday November 2nd was the day. As I sat down in the chair with hair cape around my neck the anticipation was heavy. The hair was sectioned off to be cut then the first snip came. Instantly I felt a release of energy. The more my stylist snipped the more liberated I felt. Next it was time for the clippers to taper the sides as well as the back of my head. In addition, to see the hair on the floor was the greatest feeling ever.
The versatility that “Natural Hair” has, it allows you to have various choices to style your hair. I haven’t felt this free in a long time. My smile was so wide and so big. The new cut ignited a fire within to want to do more with my life including my health and overall appearance. In the same fashion turning “43” the first of 2019 played a major roll. Short hair always made me look my age oppose to looking younger with longer hair. This Tapered TWA suits me just fine. The “Phoenix” that rose from the ashes is flying high & proud.
