2019 BET AWARDS HOST REGINA HALL.jpg

The BET Awards has been the only platform that brings awareness to the current injustices that are going on in the world today. This year, host Regina Hall opened up the show with a tribute to “Go-Go” music. Regina Hall who is a Washington D.C. native brought the elders of “Go-Go” such as Sugar Bear from E.U., Rare Essence as well as the sounds of Chuck Brown. Actress Taraji P. Henson who is also a native of Washington D.C. joined Regina on stage. Currently, there is a hashtag #dontmuteGoGo all over social media due to the gentrification of white people trying to take control of “Chocolate City” by attacking the music that D.C. is known for. Regina opened up her set by giving us a history lesson of D.C. in its hay day. It all started in April after a noise complaint that a Metro PCS store was playing Go-Go music too loud. This caused outrage from the people across the DMV area not to mention elected officials. The residents of the Black and Brown communities took a stance and continues to play Go-Go music as often as possible.

2019 BET AWARDS TOP PERFORMANCES & MORE:

2019 BET AWARDS BLUE CARPET OFFSET AND CARDI B..jpg

The first opening performance was none other than Offset & Cardi B. Their set was a medley of the hot collabo track together off Offset’s LP Father of Four titled “Clout”. What was so surprising is the brief dance segment with Offset. Cardi joins in with a tantalizing lap dance as she drops her bars. Up next, Cardi goes right in with her current single “Press”.

2019 BET AWARDS PERFORMANCES LIZZO.jpg

Lizzo lit up the stage with her performance of “Truth Hurts”! She is simply amazing. I jumped out of my seat when she started twerking all while playing the Flute. The energy and the confidence that eludes her is so infectious. Lizzo is a beautiful young woman who is not ashamed of her body.

2019 BET AWARDS PERFORMANCES LIL NAS X AND BILLY RAY CYRUS.jpeg

Lil Nas X alongside Billy Ray Cyrus performance took us on a Rodeo Ride. Lil Nas has stirred up the Country Music Industry with his latest song “Old Town Road”. The song itself has a catchy beat to it, everyone can listen to it from young to old. There have been some unsavory comments made about his collaboration but at the end of the day, the song is sweeping the charts.

2019 BET AWARDS PERFORMANCES FANTASIA.jpg

Fantasia performed “Enough” from her new album called SKETCHBOOK. Her performance was electrifying as always you can expect greatness from this woman. She has been wowing us ever since American Idol. Throughout the highs and lows of her career Fantasia seems to come out on top.

2019 BET AWARDS PERFORMANCES H.E.R MUSIC.jpeg

H.E.R. MUSIC set was so inspirational. Prior to her performance BET honored the men of the Central Park 5 now known as the Exonerated 5 with a standing ovation. Ava DuVernay 3 part series called “When They See Us” shed light on various issues with the justice system in this country. H.E.R. performed “The Lord Is Coming” which was so fitting for the current state this country is in. The lyrics alone are so moving that penetrates the soul.

2019 BET AWARDS PERFORMANCES MJB.jpeg

The biggest performance of the evening was Mary J. Blige receiving her Lifetime Achievement Award!!!! Rihanna presented Mary with this prestigious award. After Mary’s acceptance speech she ushered in a medley of the most popular songs of her career. Starting off with “My Life” then “I’m Going Down” which the audience just took over from there. She gave us, “Real Love, You Remind Me, Love Without A Limit, Reminisce, Just Fine, I Can Love You, Be Happy, & You’re All I Need”. Lil Kim along with Method Man came out to perform as well which really set the crowd on fire. For Mary to be at the tender age of (48) she lit the stage on fire. Mary J. Blige has set the bar high for the performers to come after her. Through her trials and tribulations that life can bring we felt every range of emotions resonating from the music. When she came on the scene I was in high school, “What’s the 411” was in heavy rotation. She is the reason why I started wearing ponytails. Not only was Mary talented but she is also the trendsetter. Every female across the country had to have her hairstyles most importantly dress like her. She deserves to be crowned the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul!!

2019 BET AWARDS TRIBUTE TO NIPSEY HUSSLE.jpeg

It’s been almost 3 months since the tragic loss of Nipsey Hussle. BET honored Ermias Asghedom with a Humanitarian Award for all his work in the city of Los Angeles. His family accepted the award on his behalf. YG performed the track that both him & Nipsey collaborated on “Last Time That I Checc’d”. Marsha Ambrosius performed her collaboration track with Nipsey “Real Big”. DJ Khaled and John Legend performed the song “Higher” which the last video Nipsey did before his untimely passing. The speeches from Nipsey’s parents and grandmother were powerful and moving. The love of his life Lauren London held it down by stating “The marathon will continue”! Nipsey provided the blueprint and tools for us to carry on.

2019 BET AWARDS TYLER PERRY ONLY.jpg

BET honored Tyler Perry with the Icon Award. Taraji P. Henson presented Tyler with the award after she described that he was the only filmmaker to pay her for her worth. Tyler’s speech was so compelling that he had the crowd on their feet. Here is a brief snippet of his speech: “And, I want you to hear this, which meant that there was Confederate soldiers on that base, plotting and planning on how to keep 3.9 million negroes enslaved. Now that land is owned by one negro.”…… “While everybody was fighting for a seat at the table talking about #OscarsSoWhite, #OscarsSoWhite, I said, ‘Y’all go ahead and do that,’” he said. “But while you’re fighting for a seat at the table, I’ll be down in Atlanta building my own. Because what I know for sure is that if I could just build this table, God will prepare it for me in the presence of my enemies.”
